I Straightened My Hair | YouTube Natural Hair Video

In the 4 years I’ve been natural, I hadn’t attempted to straighten my hair with a flat iron.

Up until now, I had only used direct heat to do a blow out .

I would also use indirect heat to stretch my hair by roller setting.

I said I wanted to wait until year 5 to flat iron my hair but, what’s one more year!

Now, I didn’t actually do the straightening myself. The only stylist I used to go to when I was relaxed is who I contacted to flat iron my natural hair.

As you can see in the video, my hair is REALLY straight! Am I concerned about possible heat damage? Not really. I only say this because my curl pattern is naturally loose: meaning, I don’t have tightly coiled hair. Because of this, I don’t wear wash n go’s and I rarely wear twist-outs and braid-outs longer than 1 day. On a typical day, you’ll find me wearing my hair in a bun or two-strand twists.

So, for my hair to remain in a somewhat “straightened” stated wouldn’t bother me, given how I wear my hair stretched almost 100% of the time.

In my next video, I’ll show you how my hair reverted (or didn’t) back to its natural state.

What was your experience like when you straightened your natural hair?

Straw Set on Natural Hair | YouTube Natural Hair Tutorial

It’s been a few years since I’ve done a straw set on my natural hair. Now that my hair is longer, I wanted to see how the style would look, in comparison to when I did it back in 2012.

In this YouTube video tutorial, I decided to use SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Frizz-Free Mousse instead of my usual go-to setting lotion styler of choice.

Overall, I’m happy with how it turned out. It was nice to change it up a little bit, product-wise.  Using the mousse didn’t leave my hair crunchy but instead, gave me a soft hold.  If you’re looking for a stronger hold, you may want to consider using a 50/50 mix of setting lotion and water.  I say definitely try this out so you can compare the results on your own hair.  For me,  I like how my hair looks when the straw curls have more of a tighter hold, and gradually fall and fluff out the longer I keep the style in.
